5G has been the buzzword in the smartphone industry for long and Xiaomi has been at the forefront of bringing 5G phones to markets where the technology is available for consumers. This year only, we saw flagship phones like the Mi Mix 3, Mi 9 and others get a 5G variant on supported markets. However, Xiaomi is now willing to push 5G technology massively via more phones and at least for 2020, it plans to offer 5G support as standard for all its premium phones.
And that includes a lot of models in Xiaomi’s lineup, given that there have been several premium Xiaomi phones in prices above CNY 2,000, which is approximately Rs 20,000. At the keynote presentation during the annual China Mobile Global Partner Conference, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun said that all Xiaomi phones in 2020 priced above CNY 2,000 will come equipped with 5G support as standard. 5G is a growing sector in markets like China and Xiaomi intends to take the maximum benefits.
That means it is now confirmed that Xiaomi’s next-gen flagship phones will get support for 5G connectivity as standard. The Mi 10 series, which is expected to launch in January, will probably get 5G support as standard. And for all the premium phones Xiaomi makes, 5G support will be a part of them. And since Redmi is also part of the brand, we could expect to see the Redmi K30 Pro, which is expected to get the next-gen Qualcomm flagship chipset, will come with 5G support.
But does this mean that all next-year Xiaomi flagships in India will come with 5G support? That remains doubtful as 5G is unlikely to come to markets like India in the next few years. Hence, it could be possible that Xiaomi will make separate 4G versions of their 5G models for sale in markets like India. Hence, the Redmi K30 Pro or whatever Xiaomi decides to call its next flagship for India might only come with 4G support.
Globally though, Xiaomi now has more premium series phones than ever. The recently unveiled Mi CC9 series could offer 5G support in supported markets. On top of that, phones like the Mi Mix Alpha, which is a concept device, for now, could also get 5G support. The Mix Alpha has a wraparound display but it is still only a concept device for now.
