Parenting styles have a changed a lot. In fact we have many titles given to new-age parents – helicopter parents to panda parents. While they may discard the old ways of parenting, calling it too outdated and underwhelming, you can’t ignore the fact that some of them were not only effective but also helped raise kids in the best possible way. So, let’s take a trip down memory lane and recall all those parenting rules which are still relevant in today’s time.
With hectic work schedules and a busy life, we have somehow forgotten the tradition of family meals. As a result, everyone eats separately (doing things they like) but that isn’t a healthy practice. Families should try and get at least one meal of the day together. And with the pandemic, we can easily plan that.
Importance of failure
While rejection and failure might make your kid depressed, it will also imbibe in him the quality of introspection. But what do we do as parents? We try to guard them and protect them from adversities. Well, we are raising kids who are not resilient, which can be a disaster for them. So allow your kids to fail and falter; it will make them better learners.
Remember when you used to spend literally your whole evening playing outside? Nowadays, kids would rather spend time indoors than outside. So ensure that your kids go out and play. This will not only engage them in physical activities but will also get them the much-needed fresh air.
While it is essential to give kids freedom, some rules need to be made clear from the very beginning. There is no harm in setting house rules like no phones on the dining table and 8 PM home curfew. Do not think you are being unnecessarily strict by setting rules within your household! Children should learn the importance of rules.
As the old saying goes “Early to bed, and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise”, a proper bedtime routine is an absolute necessity. This will not only keep them active throughout the day but also get them good hours of sleep. And as we already know, poor sleep leads to lack of concentration and even obesity.
